Hair SOS: End of Summer Hair Care

AUTHOR - DATE - 29/Aug/2013 / CATEGORY - 0 Comments

During the summer months, We often put our tresses through some serious damage – from the heat, sun, sea and chlorine to extra styling products and styling in general. So with the summer in the UK coming to an end, we’ve put together a little guide on Hair SOS and how to care for your hair post summer.

Summer Hair Care

Clarifying Shampooclarifying shampoo used every now and again are a great way to get rid of any product build up which can often leave hair feeling lank. On holiday, chlorine can coat the hair too, not to mention all of those extra styling products and holding sprays we use to keep our hair frizz free and smooth in the humidity. A clarifying shampoo will get rid of any build up and have your hair feeling clean in no time. Remember though, don’t use them too often as you don’t want to completely strip your hair!

Extra Moisture – After hair is subjected to a lot more sun in during the summer, you need to give it a little TLC with extra moisture to stop it drying out. Our favourite is Moroccanoil – after washing hair, add a drop of Moroccanoil to the ends of the hair. Hair is smoother and moisturizes dried out ends. For washing, on the days where you’re not using a clarifying shampoo, use a moisturizing shampoo and conditioner to get your hair back into a good conditioner. We love Paul Mitchell Instant Moisture Daily Shampoo, it deeply hydrates thirsty and damaged hair as well as plumping up those skinny strands! It’s also safe for coloured hair too.

Handle with care – If the ends of your hair are dry, damaged and split, be sure to handle with care. Hair is at its weakest point when wet, so take extra care when brushing hair after washing. For gentle detangling, use a Tangle Teezer starting from the ends of the hair and make your way to the roots. This way and tangles aren’t brushed down the hair to the ends, making it even harder to get out! If you have long hair, you may find your hair gets tangled very easily. If this is the case then invest in a leave in conditioner or detangler. This will add an extra boost of conditioner and gently smooth strands so combing is easier.

Deep Treatments – Apply a deep treatment section by section after washing hair. If you do this in the shower, the steam will help it penetrate the hair shaft too. Our favourites are Macadamia Deep Repair Mask and Redken Extreme Strength Builder.

Colour Change – After summer, highlights can often look brassy, especially for blondes. Come Autumn, change to richer tones such as caramel, gold and toffee for blondes, and auburn or chestnut for brunettes. If your blonde hair is looking brassy after a holiday, try washing your hair with Clynol Silver Shampoo – the purple hue counteracts those pesky yellow tones!

Time For a Cut – The best way to make damaged hair healthy again is to get the ends trimmed. Chlorine, sun, salt and even elastics that you use to tie hair up all lead to damaged ends. If you leave them they’ll continue to split so regular trips to the hairdressers will keep the ends in top condition.

So what are your end of summer hair care tips? Do you have any favourite hair products or treatments?
